Quilt Repair Tidbits. The next (somewhat) weekly installment of quilt repair tidbits and photos.
This week’s tidbit: A hand-me-down set of vintage/antique Mosaic/Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks.
I’ll be teaching a virtual quilt care and repair workshop in winter 2024. One thing I’ll be talking about is learning how to tell the age of the fabrics in old quilts. These blocks have a secret key to their age.
All the info about the workshop is on my website. And you can email me to be added to the interest list for notification when registration opens ...

I’m starting a new little outreach project here. A weekly tidbit and photos. A new insight or skill? A really cool fabric? Who knows what it’ll be!
This week’s tidbit: I’ve found myself ending up patching with fabrics that at first glance I was sure would look terrible. They certainly aren’t exact matches, but end up being just right.
My underlying goal is to inspire new students for the virtual workshop I’m planning for winter 2024. All the info is on my website. And you can ...
This Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt was offered as a kit to purchase in 1933. I like the idea of swooning over hundreds of pre-cut hexagons. And the price can't be beaten!

read moreFinding just the right fabrics to restore a vintage or antique quilt can be a challenge. The chances of The Exact Match are slim. It's almost always about finding fabrics that blend in as unobtrusively as possible. This is true whether using vintage or modern reproductions.
Sometimes fabrics that blend perfectly into the existing set of fabrics seem to fall into my lap, but sometimes a lengthy search ends up with settling for the better of several options.
My restoration of this Lone Star quilt (1930s) serves as an example of the fabric search stage of quilt restoration. I ...

read moreHello, friends, and happy Wednesday! I’m super excited to share a fun new pattern with you today. My Bouquet Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt pattern has two different size options, and I love them both. While you can make a delightful lap-size quilt, there is also a wall-hanging or mini quilt option included. Both quilts are […]

read moreThis friendship quilt has been in my collection for a few years. It hasn't received a lot of attention. I don't even have a good photo of the whole quilt, it's quite large. I call it Mother's Quilt because there are not one but two blocks that say "Mother"; the second one has the date 1936.
I spent two days on Ancestry.com and I now know a lot more about the quilt and its makers. I found the majority of names in the 1930 census for Richland Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Very conveniently, most of ...
read moreA customer sent me a quilt for repair, and included photos of her collection of family quilts. She gave me permission to share them with you here. What a treat to have this many quilts passed down for so many generations! And only one, the Grandmother's Flower Garden, was in need of repair.
The owner says:
I have a quilt from every generation down through ones that my mother made for me and for her 9 grandchildren. My family tree goes back to the Mayflower as a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullin; it also includes James ...
read moreIt’s Cindy reporting in today with a yellow dilemma. I’m getting ready to join my Grandmother’s Flower Garden Blocks and I have two yellow prints to choose from.
In keeping with my 30’s inspired blocks, both prints are designed by Darlene Zimmerman. The print below is called “Sunshine Garden” and it has triangles surrounded by tiny dots in a random pattern. It’s a gold/yellow print on a white background.
My next print is called “Southern Belles” and it has teeny, tiny x’s and o’s in structured rows and columns. It’s also ...
read moreWhen I am feeling stressed, I have trouble concentrating. Normally I am full of ideas for projects that I want to try, but not in times like these. I need something soothing, dull, repetitive. Something I can work on, using my ear buds, listening to music that I can hum to.
When I lived in Japan, my mother became ill and a two week Home Leave turned into two months. Peter went back to work in Tokyo, and I stayed in Mom’s apartment (with my sister (ugh)). Luckily I had brought hand stitching with me; I was working on ...

read moreAt the end of our fabulous virtual service, my church, Heart for the World, sang this song and wow! What a blessing it was for me! They encouraged us to share a #hopewins testimony, so here's mine!
Great service, HFTW Team. “One Thing Remains “ was my cancer fighting mantra. In fact, right after I was diagnosed, we were on our way to HFTW for the first time. I set a fleece before God to show me if this was our new home church: I asked Him for this very song to be sung during praise and ... read more
